A Game of Clue (06/29/2026)

Last evening, I played Clue with my sister and two nieces. I haven’t played that game in years. Turns out that neither had they. So, it was a nostalgic game night. And as we played, I realized how much it mirrored life.

For instance, I’d be headed to the library, but the other players kept plucking my character token from my path to move me to another place so they could use my character in their guesses. Life can be like that, where we plan our moves and path, but others divert us, and we have to “recalculate.”

And there is the whole dice thing. We want to get to our destination as quickly as possible, but we can’t will the roll of a six. Last evening, I got more than my share of ones and twos, moving at a snail’s pace.

But one of the most profound ways the game is like life is that one has to be aware and alert during the game. One can eliminate the wrong characters or weapons or rooms by carefully watching what others guess and who has those cards. The LORD calls us to be aware and attentive in life, too. Grace can help us to recognize the wrong paths and activities.

I will say that it was a fun evening, partly because I did manage to win a couple of times, purely by luck. But mostly I enjoyed it because it allowed me to spend time with those I love.

And it reminded me that in life, I need to pay attention. It also reminded me that sometimes an unwanted detour can take me to the right place at the right time, which the LORD calls providence.

As we continue our journeys of faith, hope and love, let us be attentive, let us be patient, and let us read the clues around us well and with love.
