Can You Find the Saint? (11/01/2024)

Today is the Solemnity of All Saints. Today we are reminded that we are all called to be saints, to holiness, to choose the LORD and love always and everywhere. Today, let us look around ourselves for the goodness the LORD has called us all to being lived out loud through the words and actions of others. Today let us see if we can find the “saints in the making” in our midst.

They are everywhere, or they should be everywhere. Unlike “Where’s Waldo?” where there is only one Waldo in every scene, in the real world there could and should be several “saints in the making” in every inhabited location around the world. They are gathered in the churches, but they are also at work, in our homes, schools, factories, and shopping centers. Sainthood isn’t about geography, it’s about loving well, loving always.

Oh, they aren’t perfect. But they are trying. They know about the LORD’s mercy because they have called upon the LORD often for it, and they are generous in giving that mercy to others as imperfect as themselves. And they trust in the power of the Spirit to guide them and grace them because they are humble folks who know the essential truth, that they cannot make the journey solely on their own volition. And they are receptive and appreciative to companions on the way and are known to companion others because they have learned firsthand how important that is.

And as we look about, let us not forget to look within. We, too, are called to be among the “saints in the making” as long as we’re this side of the sod. We, too, are called every day in every way at every turn headed to everywhere. It’s all in our choices. May we choose well.
