Scripture Text: Acts 4:32-37
The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the Apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the Apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.
Thus Joseph, also named by the Apostles Barnabas (which is translated “son of encouragement”), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the Apostles.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The first reading if from the Acts of the Apostles and recounts the camaraderie of the early Christian community where the individuals shared what they had, so no one went without.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How generous am I with my faith community and with those in my local community?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we raise our voices to You in praise and thanksgiving. We ask that You send your Spirit to tenderize our minds and hearts so that we might more clearly see our sisters and brothers and more lovingly respond to their needs by sharing what You have given to us – our time, our talents, and our treasures. We look to your beloved Son, Jesus, who modeled for us sacrificing for the sake of others. Grant that we may more closely follow in his footsteps as his disciples seeking to serve others with great love. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
