Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: August 1,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 14:1-12

Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead. Therefore, mighty powers are at work in him.”

Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, for John had told him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people because they counted him as a prophet.

But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and pleased Herod. Therefore, he swore to give her whatever she asked for. Instructed by her mother, she said, “Give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

The king was distressed, but because of his oaths in the guests’ presence, he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl who took it to her mother. His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him. And they went and told Jesus.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Have I acquiesced to evil in the world for fear of what others will think of me if I stand up to it?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In today’s gospel, Matthew recounts Herod’s order to execute John the Baptist because of a foolish promise made publicly. The events underscore how social pressures and human pride can impede our judgment.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, You created me with a free will and you gave me a conscience to help temper my impulses and desires. Send the Spirit to strengthen my understanding of your love and your desire that I love You and live that love well in my treatment of others. Strengthen my resolve to live in right relationship with You and with all my brothers and sisters. Amen.
