Scripture Text:  Hebrews 12:1-4

Brothers and sisters:

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The second reading for today from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds of the examples of those who came before us as they sought to persevere in their faith. And the author especially raises Jesus Christ for our consideration when we feel challenged in the living the faith.

To what or whom do I turn to when life challenges my faith?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior and brother, we seek to follow You, to walk in your footsteps. Send your Spirit to strengthen our resolve for those challenges we will face this day as we seek to live the love your taught us and modeled for us. Grant that we may deny ourselves, pick up our crosses and follow You for love of You and for the glory of the Father with whom You and the Spirit reign, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
