Scripture Text:  Matthew 13:54-58

Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue. They were astonished and said, “Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds? Is he not the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and in his own house.” And he did not work many mighty deeds there because of their lack of faith.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s gospel text recounts Jesus’ reception when he visited his hometown. While they were astonished at his wisdom and what they’d heard of his deeds, they doubted that the life of one from such humble origin could be consequential. Their doubt closed them off to the loving goodness Christ wanted to bring to them.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Does doubt close me off from Christ’s touch? Does doubt drown out my real need? Does doubt numb me to the love Christ offers me moment to moment?

Praying:

LORD, I do believe. Help my unbelief. Amen.
