Scripture Text: Isaiah 56:1, 6-7

Thus says the LORD: Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, ministering to him, loving the name of the LORD, and becoming his servants—all who keep the sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today is the opening section of the third section of the prophetic Book of Isaiah, the section written after the exile and return of the Israelites, often referred to as 3rd Isaiah. This passage is an exhortation from the LORD through the prophet. We can see that the message is familiar calling for the hearers to observe the LORD’s commands and to seek a right relationship with the LORD. What is new is the inclusion of those beyond the House of Israel, the foreigners, the Gentiles. Today’s text shows that salvation was being opened to others, to those who honored the LORD and the expectations of the covenant. Today’s text reveals the universality of the LORD’s kingdom.

How does this pertain to us today?

The text relates to us, Christians who are not of Jewish descent. It reminds us that the LORD’s promise of salvation extends to us if we seek to meet the LORD’s expectations of humble love, faithfulness, and love of others.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I do what is just – seeking always to grow and strengthen my relationship with others? Do I do what is right to build my relationship with the LORD – placing it foremost in my mind and heart and striving to draw nearer to the LORD daily?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, your desire for our salvation precipitated the gift of your beloved Son to humanity, sending Him to dwell among us so that as our brother His sacrifice upon the cross would atone for all our sins and reconcile us to You. Send your Spirit to strengthen our resolve to live as your daughters and sons, as true disciples of your beloved Son. Grant that we may live righteous lives, working always and everywhere to bring You glory through our words and deeds, through our love and life. We ask this in the name of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
