Date: Transfiguration of the LORD
Scripture Text: 2 Peter 1:16-19
Beloved:
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice coming from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The second reading for today from the Second Letter of Peter speaks to us of the origin of Peter’s proclamation of Jesus Christ as Son of God. Peter was present with Christ on the mountain at the time of Jesus’ Transfiguration. The Good News is “a lamp shining in a dark place.”
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Have I allowed the light of Christ to illuminate my life? Have I shared that light with others?
Praying:
LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior, You came to redeem us, to offer us life in abundance for loving belief in You. Send your Spirit to open our minds, our hearts, our whole being to You and your transformative and redeeming love. Grant that we may allow that love to tenderize us and make of us true disciples who bring You to others and others to You. Amen.
