Scripture Text:  Luke 1:46-56

Mary said:

“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;

my spirit rejoices in God my savior.

for he has looked upon his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

and has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children for ever.”

Mary remained with Elizabeth about three monthsand then returned to her home.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s gospel reading recounts Mary’s prayer, the Magnificat, which she proclaimed during her visit with Elizabeth, her cousin. Her humble prayer proclaims the greatness of the LORD who lifts up the lowly.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Does my soul proclaim the greatness of the LORD to others?

Praying:

LORD, I come before You in awe and wonder, your greatness fills my mind and heart. Send your Spirit to help me articulate to others the wonder of your love, the breadth of your care, and the depth of your mercy. Grant that in this holy season of preparation and during the season of Christmas that I may not only express my love for You in words but also in my actions. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
