Scripture Text: Hebrews 12:1-4

Brothers and sisters:

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him Jesus endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.

The first reading for today continues the reading of Hebrews. Today’s text reminds us of the call of Jesus, to rid ourselves of sin, and to persevere in faithful obedience, in the footsteps of our redeemer.

What do I do when I grow weary? Do I call upon Christ who knows about the many trials?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved Son to dwell among us as our brother and our redeemer, to teach us through his words but most especially through His example about loving obedience to your will for us. Send your Spirit to guide us as your Spirit guided Christ and to strengthen us and our desire to live as You will for love of You. Grant that we might persevere. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
