Scripture Text: Matthew 5:33-37
Jesus said to his disciples: "You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,' and your 'No' mean 'No.' Anything more is from the Evil One."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The gospel reading for today continues our reading of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew. In today’s segment, Jesus focuses on the sincerity and honesty of our words – that our “yes” means “yes.”
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I honest? Am I trustworthy?
Praying:
LORD, You are love itself, and you are trustworthy. And You created us in your image and likeness and call us to live as the children You created. Send your Spirit to fill us with the courage and fortitude to live as You created us to live and as your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, taught us through word and example. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
