Scripture Text: Matthew 6:19-23
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.”
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel continues our reading of Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” as recounted by Matthew. Jesus speaks to us about treasuring the non-material, the spiritual, and He warns us about what we look for in life.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
What am I looking for, searching for?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we long for You and we search for “the Way” to You. You sent your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who is “the Way and the Truth and the Life” to guide us through His teachings and His actions so that we might have life in abundance with You. Send your Spirit to help us day to day to choose wisely and live lovingly, as You created us to be your daughters and sons. Grant that we may live this life treasuring our relationship with You, with the Son, and with the Spirit knowing that illuminates our mind and tenderizes our hearts to love well and love long You and all our sisters and brothers. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
