Date: Solemnity of the Sacred Heart

Scripture Text:  Romans 5:5b-11

Brothers and sisters:

The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

How much more then, since we are now justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son,how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The second reading for today’s Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is drawn from Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Paul reminds us today of the love of the LORD, while we were sinners, asked His beloved Son to selflessly sacrifice himself for our salvation. Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have been reconciled with the Father Almighty. It is so very humbling to acknowledge with all our being that Christ died for us while we were sinners. He had us on His mind as He hung upon the cross.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

What am I making of this gift from the Father and the Son through the Spirit? How am I opening myself to the salvation won for me?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, your love for us astounds us for we recognize that Your love and your desire for our salvation necessitated the sacrifice of your only-begotten Son. As we ponder what asking Christ to do this for us, sinners, when He himself was sinless, tenderizes our hearts. As we look upon our Savior and consider His Sacred Heart, full of love for You and love for us, we feel drawn all the more to Him. Send your Spirit to stir within us, to fan the fire of His love for us so that it might fill us to overflowing. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
