Date: Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul
Scripture Text: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18
I, Paul, am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.
The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly Kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The second reading for today is from Paul’s 2nd Letter to Timothy. In it, Paul acknowledges that his time is running out, but he notes that he has “competed well” – “finished the race” – “kept the faith.” His writings encourage us all to live our faith fully all the days of our lives and promises that the LORD will stand by us through our efforts and will award us for our lives lived for Him.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I applying myself daily to my discipleship? Am I keeping the faith”
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son Jesus Christ, and Most Holy Spirit, always and everywhere You hold us in your love, You sustain us, You give us strength. As we begin this week in You, we look to You for your continued power and presence in our lives and for guidance as we seek to bring You to others and others to You. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
