Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: June 6,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Mark 12:38-44

And He said to them as He taught, “Beware of the scribes who love to go about in long clothing and love salutations in the marketplace, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts. They devour widows’ houses and for a pretense recite long prayers. These shall receive greater damnation.”

Jesus sat down against the treasury wall and watched show the people cast money into the treasury. Many that were rich threw in much. Then a certain poor widow came, and she put in two mites which make a farthing. And He called his disciples to him and said, “Truly, I tell you that this poor widow has cast more in than all the others because they contributed out of their abundance but she gave all she had, her whole livelihood.”

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel reading shows Jesus contrasting the corrupt behavior of religious leaders and the rich giving from their excess with a poor widow who gives what she herself needs for her own livelihood. Jesus contrasts pretense and pompous behavior with authentic piety.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Loving and gracious LORD, I lift my mind, my heart, and my voice to You in praise and thanksgiving. Look into my very being, send your Spirit to stir within me, and help me to live the life You created me to live. Grant that I may grow daily in my humility as I come before You, aware of all You are and that I would not be except for You. May my words and actions this day bring You glory. Amen.
