Scripture Text:  2 Tm 4:1-8

Beloved:

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry.

For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today comes from Paul’s 2nd Letter to Timothy and focuses on our call to always “proclaim the word.” Paul reminds us that we are to be persistent in our ministry even when it is not convenient, even when it means enduring hardships or worse. Paul goes on to note that he himself, though imprisoned, has “finished the race; I have kept the faith.”

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I keeping the faith? Am I being persistent in proclaiming the word to others?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, send your Spirit to strengthen my resolve to live the life I am called to live, to proclaim the word always and everywhere regardless of hardships. Grant that I may become the one You created me to be, the one your beloved Son gave His life so that I could be, the one Christ calls me to be as His disciple. May I persevere in participating in the ongoing mission of salvation for love of You and love of my sisters and brothers everywhere. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
