Scripture Text: 2 Corinthians 4:13—5:1
Brothers and sisters: Since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, I believed, therefore I spoke, we too believe and therefore we speak, knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God. Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal. For we know that if our earthly dwelling, a tent, should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The second reading for today is taken from Paul’s 2nd Letter to the Corinthians and speaks of the apostles’ mission of faith, bringing Christ to others and others to Christ. The grace bestowed in abundance upon the faithful, for the glory of God, fortifies the faithful for earthly afflictions which are “transitory.” Believers in Christ have the hope of eternal dwelling in heaven with our LORD.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I speak of Christ to others as a follower? What efforts am I truly making for the spreading of the Good News so that others may have life?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved Son as our brother and our redeemer. Salvation from You was won through Him in his selfless sacrifice upon the cross of Calvary; death was defeated in His resurrection from the tomb. Send your Spirit to stir within us so that in our belief in your Son, we are compelled to speak to others, to share the Good News with others for your glory. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
