Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: March 29, 2024

Date: Good Friday  

Scripture Text:  Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:7-9

Brothers and sisters:

Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.

In the days when Christ was in the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The second reading for today is taken from the Letter to the Hebrews. It reminds us in a most powerful way of Jesus’ awareness of struggles and of the tests of human life. Recognizing this, we are assured that we can approach our Savior confident of His mercy.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I trust Jesus’ loving and empathetic mercy? Do I bring to Him, with humility, my failing and my needs?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior, we lift our hearts and voices to You this day on which we remember the price You paid for our salvation out of love for Father and for us. As we remember your passion and death to save us and to reconcile us to the Father, we hold your love for us in our minds and in our hearts. Send the Spirit to transform our sorrow for your suffering for us into resolve to live the life You call us to live as your disciples, following in your footsteps this day and all days. Amen.
