Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: May 12,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Acts 16:22-34

And the multitude rose up together against them (Paul and Silas), and the magistrates had them stripped and beaten. And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison. They charged the jailor to keep them secure, so he thrust them into the inner prison and bound their hands and feet in the stocks.

And it happened at midnight as Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises to God within the hearing of the other prisoners that suddenly there was a great earthquake that shook the foundations of the prison. And immediately, all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosened.

The jailer of the prison was awakened from his sleep and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword and to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled, but Paul cried out in a loud voice saying, “Do yourself no harm. We are all here still.”

Then he called for a light and entering in, trembling, fell down before Paul and Silas. He brought them out of the cells and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” And they told him, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you and your house shall be saved.” And they spoke to him and to all who were in his house the word of the Lord. And at that hour of the night, he washed their wounds. And he and all the members of his household were baptized immediately. And he brought them into his house, set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s first reading recounts the miraculous freeing of Paul and Silas in Philippi and the subsequent conversion of their jailer and his whole household. This account conveys the power of prayer in adversity and of joy even amid persecution and suffering.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten Son to us not only to reveal your great love for us but also to save us from our sins when we were unable and unwilling to do so ourselves. Send your Spirit to illuminate our minds and to tenderize our hearts so that we may more fully open ourselves to your Son, Jesus Christ, Son of God. Grant that our faith will deepen, our hope will broaden and our love for You, our love for Christ, our love for one another will intensify bringing us closer to You and the life in abundance you want for us all. May we be able to withstand the suffering that comes from this world for believing, for hoping, and for loving. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
