Monday of the 6th Week of Easter – Memorial of St. Philip Neri

Scripture Text:  John 15:26—16:4a

Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

"I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

In the gospel text for today, Jesus continues His “final discourse” with His disciples, promising the gift of the Spirit, “the Advocate.” Jesus calls upon the disciples to testify to the world in faith. Lastly, Jesus warns the disciples of coming persecutions to those who follow Him and labor in His name because they know Him and the Father.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I a witness to Jesus in the world? Do I share my faith in Christ with others?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, as our brother, to assume our human nature in all ways except sin and to redeem us so that we might have life in abundance with You. We seek to follow Him as His disciples and pray for the gift of the Spirit to enlarge our faith, to dwell in our hearts, and to transform our souls. Make of us true disciples who give witness to Christ and to the salvation He won for us according to your will. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
