Scripture Text:  1 Peter 1:18-25

Beloved:

Realize that you were ransomed from your futile conduct, handed on by your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold but with the precious Blood of Christ as of a spotless unblemished Lamb. He was known before the foundation of the world but revealed in the final time for you, who through him believe in God who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Since you have purified yourselves by obedience to the truth for sincere brotherly love, love one another intensely from a pure heart. You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and abiding word of God, for:

"All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the field; the grass withers, and the flower wilts; but the word of the Lord remains forever." This is the word that has been proclaimed to you.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today draws from the 1st Letter of Peter and reminds us of our Redeemer’s sacrifice for our salvation and life. Peter calls his readers to “love one another intensely from a pure heart.”

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I obedient to the truth? Am I obedient to the command of my Redeemer and LORD? Do I genuinely seek to love others as He loves us?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved and only-begotten Son to dwell among us and as our brother to redeem us from our sins and to conquer death, the penalty of sin. Jesus commanded us to love one another as He love us. Send the Spirit to tenderize our minds and hearts so that His words may bear fruit in our lives, so that we might be more loving, so that we might “love one another intensely from a pure heart. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
