Scripture Text:  Luke 14:12-14

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees. He said to the host who invited him, "When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or sisters or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s gospel features Jesus advising a Pharisee and us in modern day to act generously without concern for being paid back but rather with concern for acting righteously or in right relationship with the LORD and others – doing what is needed to grow the relationship and to benefit the other.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How righteous and gracious and generous am I? Am I able to give in the moment what I know the other needs with love?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You are love itself and You created us from love, through love, and in love. And You call each of us to live lives lovingly. Send your Spirit to help us put our relationship with You first and to assist us in putting the needs of our sisters and brothers before personal gain. Grant that we may grow into the disciples your beloved Son calls us to be, workers for justice for our sisters and brothers. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who loves and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
