Scripture Text: Luke 11:27-28
While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed." He replied, "Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s short gospel text isn’t to be taken lightly nor quickly for either approach would probably result in misunderstanding. Jesus’ response to the woman’s comment isn’t degrading His beloved mother. Jesus is noting that membership in the Kingdom isn’t based on a blood line or marriage but upon faith. We know Mary had faith. We know she was blessed.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I assume that I have a place in the kingdom? What is my assumption based upon? Have I heard the word of God and observed it?
Praying:
LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of Mary, we raise our voices in thanksgiving to You for your life among us, for your teachings and your sharing the Word. We thank You for being the Word, the full expression of the Father Almighty. And most especially, we thank You for your selfless sacrifice for us so that we might have life in abundance. Send the Spirit to help us take in the Word of God, make room for You in our mind and hearts, and follow in your footsteps as we journey home. Grant that the salvation from the Father, through You, in the Spirit, will be ours. Amen.
