Scripture Text: Luke 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation, and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In today’s gospel reading, we hear Jesus’ call to those around Him to recognize that He is the sign and quit demanding more signs.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I test the LORD by asking for signs? Or do I believe deeply and wholly in Jesus Christ, Son of God?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only begotten Son, Jesus, to dwell among us, to take on our human nature in all ways except sin, to reveal your great, transcendent love for us, and to show us “the way and the truth and the life.” And for love of You and love of us, He selflessly gave His life upon a cross as expiation for our sins. Send the Spirit to enhance our understanding of this great gift and to increase our faith, our hope and our love. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
