Date: Friday of the 28th Week in Ordinary Time/Memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch
Scripture Text: Â Luke 12:1-7
At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, "Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees. "There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore, whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading recounts Jesus’ warning to those following Him about hypocrisy, specifically, the hypocrisy of the religious authorities who have power only over earthly matters. Christ calls us to be sincerity of mind, heart, and spirit. And Jesus assures us of the Father’s power and presence, signs of His love.
Â
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I practice what I preach? Do I walk the line I draw for others? Do I rely on the LORD as I advise others to do?
Â
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we lift our voices to You in awe and praise for You are all-knowing and all-present; You know us better than we know ourselves. Send your Spirit to stir within us and to strengthen our resolve to live into the ones You created us to be. Grant that we may hear the voice of your Son, deny ourselves, pick up our crosses, and follow Him. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
