Scripture Text:  Luke 10:13-16

Jesus said to them,

"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. And as for you, Capernaum, 'Will you be exalted to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld.'

Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

In today’s gospel, Jesus pronounces “woe to you” to the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum who failed to repent as He proclaimed the Kingdom and rejected His miracles. Jesus notes that if the pagan cities of Tyre and Sidon had witnessed what these cities had witnessed in Jesus, they would have repented. Ultimately, Jesus warns that rejecting Him is equivalent to rejecting God the Father.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I take seriously Jesus’ call to repent, to turn to Him?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, we lift our voices in praise and thanksgiving to You for all You are and all You have given to us, most especially the gift of your only-begotten Son, Jesus. You sent Him to take on our nature in all ways except sin. He and His words and His actions revealed You to us more clearly and your love for us that included your divine desire that we have life in abundance with You. Send your Spirit to stir within us a deeper acceptance and stronger embrace of Christ’s teachings through words and through actions, most especially His selfless sacrifice for our salvation. Grant that we may open ourselves to salvation from You, through Jesus, in the Spirit. Make us workers for the Kingdom for love of You and love of our sisters and brothers. Amen.
