LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Luke 10:17-24
The seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” He (Jesus) said, ‘I observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I give you the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
At that hour, Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, you have revealed them to the childlike. Even so, Father, such has been good in your sight. All things have been handed over to my by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and anyone whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
And he turned to his disciples in private and said, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I say to you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Do I focus on what I am doing or on what the LORD is doing in me, with me, and through me? Do I open myself to the wonders possible when I go where I am sent and do what I am asked?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Today’s relatively short gospel text holds so many major points for us. The disciples return from their ministry excited about the power shown through Christ’s name over evil. But Jesus shifts the focus from their achievements to the greater joy of eternal salvation when He tells them, “your names are written in heaven.” Jesus then rejoices himself and praises the Father who has revealed the Son to the childlike while hiding it from the wise. Finally, Jesus highlights His intimate relationship with the Father and His role as the “door” to the Father.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD, we come to You with joyful hearts for all that has been done in your name across the ages and across the globe. Send your Spirit to guide us and strengthen us for the work You ask us to do in your name. Grant that we might go where You send us and work with all humility knowing the power is yours, we are but the instruments of your loving power and presence in the world. Above all, help us to always and everywhere maintain our humility, recognizing the power and strength are Yours. Grant that our joy flows from believing in life in abundance with You. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
