Scripture Text: Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4
How long, O LORD? I cry for help, but you do not listen! I cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not intervene. Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.
Then the LORD answered me and said: Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily. For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late. The rash one has no integrity; but the just one, because of his faith, shall live.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In the first reading, Habakkuk, the prophet, cries out to the LORD about the iniquities he is witnessing and questions why the LORD does not intervene. God’s response is that He has a vision and justice will prevail, but it may not be immediate. The question of the time was whether the faithful would wait in hope for what the LORD promises.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How trusting am I in the LORD’s faithfulness and justice? How faithful am I? How hard do I work for justice?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we lift our prayers to your this day, aware of your power and presence always at work in our world, yet we struggle so with the evil that is still at large and operating in our human world. For our salvation, You sent your only begotten Son to take on our human nature in all ways except sin, to reveal your love for us and to gain our salvation through His selfless sacrifice for love of You and love of us. Send your Spirit to awaken within us again trust and patience for your love at work in our world and hope that opens our eyes to the ways we are to be your instruments. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
