LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Luke 10:25-37
A scholar of the law stood up and tested Jesus saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”
He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you shall live.”
But because he wanted to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Jesus replied, “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves. They stripped him of his garment and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. By chance, a priest came that way, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He went to him, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he set him upon his own animal and took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day, he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ Which of these three in do you think was neighbor to the one who fell among the thieves?”
He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Do I look upon others without judgment? Do I pass by because I don’t want to get involved in another’s need?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches us anew that our discipleship requires merciful and compassionate love that crosses all cultural and geographical boundaries.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Merciful and loving LORD, give to me an open heart, open to You and your Way, open to my sisters and brothers in You. Send the Spirit to tenderize my heart and flood with compassion for others. Grant that I may see You and your love for others as I encounter others. Remind me daily that my neighbor is anyone I see in need. I ask this in your name, Jesus. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
