LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Luke 10:38-42

Now it came to pass, as they went, Jesus entered a certain village where a woman named Martha received him into her home. She had a sister named Mary who sat at Jesus’ feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to help me.”  Jesus said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen that good part, and it will not be taken from her.”

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Am I anxious about unnecessary things? Am I focused on listening for Christ and to Christ?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In today’s gospel text we see Jesus’ encounter with the anxious Martha over her sister Mary’s lack of help. Jesus doesn’t condemn or even rebuke Martha for her efforts to serve, but rather He asks Martha to open her mind and ears and heart to His real presence first. The Christian Way is not one or the other, but both, of being contemplative, prayerful, and attentive to our LORD before we head off in service to him and for him.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD Jesus Christ, Son of God, my Savior, may I always and everywhere welcome you. Help me to still the anxiety in my mind over things to do so that I might more fully open myself to You fully rest in your presence, listen for your voice, and then go forth for love of You. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
