Scripture Text:  Luke 6:39-42

Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite!  Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

In today’s gospel text, Jesus reminds us that we must be fully trained for our discipleship. And Jesus exhorts us to take care of our own sins and failures before pointing out the sins and failures of others.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I honest with myself about my sins and failures? Or do I simply deny them?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me for I am a sinner. Send your Spirit to guide me and grace me so that I might walk more faithfully in your footsteps along “the Way.” Keep me from judging others; stir within me compassion for others and their struggles. Amen.
