Scripture Text: Luke 8:19-21
The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they wish to see you." He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The short gospel reading for today recounts Jesus’ response when told his family was outside. Jesus’ response didn’t disrespect or dismiss who mother who clearly heard the LORD’s word to her and acted on it. Jesus’ response was to tell others that the Kingdom wasn’t inherited through family connections but rather through an open heart and a willingness to live the will of the LORD.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I act as if I think the Kingdom is owed to me? How am I opening myself to the LORD’s word and seeking to act on it moment to moment?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You asked the Blessed Mother to open herself to the divine power and the Holy Spirit and to accept the role of mother to your only-begotten Son. His presence among us, His teachings, His example, His selfless sacrifice for that which You desired, our salvation, continue to illuminate our minds and conform our hearts so that our lives will be transformed. As we seek daily to hear your Word, to discern your will, we ask that You send the Spirit to strengthen our resolve so that we may always act on what You reveal to us and imitate the Blessed Mother in faith and loving trust in say, “May it be done to me according to your Word.” We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
