Scripture Text: Luke 9:18-22
Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” They said in reply, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, ‘One of the ancient prophets has arisen.’” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Christ of God.” He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.
He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading gives us Luke’s account of Jesus’ questioning of the disciples as to who others believed Him to be. And then Jesus asked what they thought about Him. Peter responds for them that He is “the Christ of God.” It must have truly surprised them when the next thing Jesus was tell them to keep it a secret for the time being and then told them He was going to be killed and resurrected.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How do I handle as a disciple the questions Jesus asks me? Whom do I say He is? And whom do I tell? Do I tell everyone now that we don’t have to keep it as secret?
Praying:
LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior, we offer You our lives as your disciples. But we need the gift of the Spirit to walk faithfully in your footsteps and to bring You to others and others to You. Grant that we may live as You call us to live, producing fruit through our lives, reliant on You “the Vine.” May we live into the children the loving and Almighty Father created us to be and proclaim the Good News of salvation from the Father, through You, in the Spirit. Amen.
