Date: Feasts of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, the Archangels

Scripture Text:  John 1:47-51

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, "Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him." Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this." And he said to him, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s gospel recounts Jesus’ encounter with Nathaniel who came to believe in Jesus because of what Jesus knew of him.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

What draws me to Jesus?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, truly You are the Son of God. Sent by the Father to assume our nature and to conquer sin and death through your loving and selfless sacrifice for our salvation, You show us “the way and the truth and the life” through your life, death, and resurrection. Your loving teachings and actions inform our minds. Your life and loving death for humanity calls to us to conform our hearts around our relationships with the Father Almighty and one another. And your loving presence to us transforms us. Send your Spirit to strengthen us for this earthly journey home to life in abundance from the Father, through You, in the Spirit. Amen.
