Scripture Text:  1 Corinthians 4:1-5

Brothers and sisters:

Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.  Now it is of course required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. It does not concern me in the least that I be judged by you or any human tribunal; I do not even pass judgment on myself; I am not conscious of anything against me, but I do not thereby stand acquitted; the one who judges me is the Lord. Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of our hearts, and then everyone will receive praise from God.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today, taken from Paul’s 1st Letter to the Corinthians, reminds us that we, as disciples, are called to be “servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” As such, our judge will be the LORD. The criticism and even rejection of others will not stop us from doing what we are called to do and from being who we are called to be.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I allow the criticism of others to stop me from serving Christ and stewarding the gifts of the LORD?

Praying:

LORD, Most Precious Spirit, Come. Fill my whole being, body, mind and soul with resolve so that I might serve Christ as I desire and become the one I was created to be. Help me embrace and employ the gifts You spread before me as well as the love You shower upon me. Assist me in discerning the Father’s will for me. Help me to live fully the life Christ calls me to live. Come, Holy Spirit, Come.
