God Bless Mothers (05/12/2024)

Today, across our country, we celebrate mothers. We give thanks to our own mothers and for our own mothers without whom we wouldn’t be. We pray to the LORD to bless our mothers wherever they are. Today, whether we realize it or not, we give thanks to the one who cooperated with our all-loving creator, carrying us as we grew from a cluster of cells to a child.

Motherhood isn’t easy. I didn’t realize it until I became one. We carry within us a great deal of ideas about mothers and frequently that results in a strained relationship with the one who knew us before anyone else and the one who provided for us even though we’d done nothing to deserve it.  Mothers are not perfect. But that simple yet anything but easy act of nurturing one known but not yet met warrants some thought, some pondering, some thanksgiving.

We are all here because we had a mother who set aside her comfort for our lives. We are here because someone deemed us loveable and worthy of life. We are here because of the LORD, our Creator, but also because of a woman who cooperated with the life-giving power of the LORD. Every day as we give thanks for our lives, our mothers should also be in our prayers as the ones who carried us so that we might live and grow into the ones the LORD created us to be.

Motherhood isn’t easy. Mothers aren’t perfect. Some exhibit more maternal characteristics than others. Regardless of where our mothers fell on the world’s motherhood spectrum, we should be grateful for the first person to companion us on our journey.

Not all mothers go on to be moms. Some, because of situations, share us with other families and we have a mom different from our birth mother. And these moms deserve thanksgiving also for walking with us, teaching us, correcting us, being one of our primary companions on the journey during our formative years.

So, wherever we are, whatever our plans, let them begin with thanksgiving to the LORD for our lives and for our mothers, the ones entrusted to carry us into life. And let us give thanks to the LORD for our mom, the ones who walked with us along the way of becoming.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
