High School Drop Off (08/29/2026)

This past week, my daughter’s car was in the shop for repairs, so I volunteered to take my grandson to high school for two days. How hard could it be? Turns out, A. M. high school drop off is complicated! It’s a lot like life.

First of all, people are coming from every direction and not at the same speed nor via the same mode of transportation: there are teens on foot, there are teens being dropped at the door, there are teens driving themselves, parking, and then walking to the door. Second, there are travel lanes that are not clearly marked but if one deviates from them, one is immediately flagged, honked at, or gestured to. Third, everyone is watching yet nobody is paying attention. I know that last one doesn’t make sense, but sometimes, life’s like that, too. At the dropoff spot there were large circles of teens sort of in the way, not moving out of the way, watching everyone come and go, yet trying to appear unaware of anyone outside their circle. Those A.M. drop-offs only took 15 minutes, door to door, but they were as stressful as a two-day trip uphill both ways.

I wanted to get my grandson there safely. But like life, dangers can come at one without warning. I also didn’t want to embarrass my grandson because he’s a freshman and this is the first week of class. I didn’t want to do something that would label him for four years, because like life, labels can hurt.

The first day, I definitely messed up on my point of drop off. I deviated from the “designated” dropoff spot. Other drivers let me know that. They also let me know that my error meant not only going around me at first but then having to let me back into the flow later. You would be proud of me for making the necessary adjustments before day two. Even an old girl can learn new strategies.

A.M. high school drop off is, as I said, a lot like life, like our journeys. We all need to get to the same place, but we don’t all start at the same place nor travel the same way.

There are rules for how we are to journey, Jesus not only taught them to us in words, He modeled them for us as He journeyed from Bethlehem to Calvary to the mount of ascension. But like the high school drop off experience, a lot of moving parts around us can cause us to take our eyes off Jesus or forget His words.

On our journeys, we not only have to make it to our destination, we have to be on the lookout for those journeying around us, give help where needed or give room where needed and do no harm to others along the way.

A.M. high school drop off is simple but that is not the same as easy. Life’s journey is the same. It is simple but it is not easy.

A.M. high school drop off should not be attempted without prayer ahead of time! Life is the same. I wouldn’t try it without prayer before departing and frequent prayer along the way.
