I Know a Guy (12/4/2023)

Every day I thank the LORD for those whose journeys intersect with mine because they so enrich my journey and teach me lessons that I need to know.

This past Friday, a guy I know from church brought in his cookie donations for the Cookie Walk. He didn’t just bring a batch of cookies; he brought in two boxes of cookies in tins he’d put them in for safe travel. He had made batches of cookies from an old recipe book because he wanted to contribute to our efforts. He’s like that. In the past, he offered to make soup more than once for events he himself couldn’t attend. But he had the ingredients, he made the time, and he delivered. And so many times throughout the year, I thank the LORD for Joe who teaches me over and over again of what is possible when our lives are fueled by authentic love and generosity.

I know another guy who loves our parish and tries to support it however he can. He came to the Cookie Walk yesterday, picked up a large container, put on his gloves, and picked out 8 cookies that looked like they had some form of chocolate in them. I told him the rule was “if it fits it ships;” I suggested there was room in his container for twenty more cookies. He smiled, told me he wasn’t really there for cookies; he told me he was there to support our effort. And then he not only paid full price for a container barely a quarter full but he also made a sizeable donation. And so, last night I thanked the LORD for Michael who teaches me over and over again about the joy of helping others along the way.

I know another guy who is always looking out for how he can help others even though he himself is challenged greatly by a sight condition. When he and his wife learn of someone in need, they step up and help beginning with prayer. I never hear him complain; I always see his joy. And when there is a special need or way to serve, if he can, he will. No excuses for him for not “showing up” and “doing what he can.” He writes me occasionally supporting what I’ve written in the blog; he is committed to helping others “on the way.” And so, last night I thanked the LORD for John who teaches me over and over again about the joy of being a companion to others.

I frequently say, “the LORD looks after fools and short Irish women, so I’ve been doubly blessed.” Truth is, while many believe I am joking, I am not. I know that daily the LORD blesses me and most frequently it is through another. This week, I have been blessed greatly by those whom the LORD has sent to share a mile or two of our journeys.

I am grateful to the LORD; I am grateful to those who walk along with me, not only keeping me company, but teaching me now to be the loving, generous, joyful, daughter and disciple I am called to be. All these guys know Christ; it is evident in their actions and demeanor. I am blessed to know so many “guys” who know our LORD and don’t keep the possibilities of life in Him their personal secret.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
