Labor Day 2025 (09/01/2025)

Today, across this great nation founded under God with the promise of freedom for all, we celebrate Labor Day, a day set aside to honor those whose labors in our nation benefit us all. We honor the doctor and the dock worker, the lawyer and the laundry worker, the teacher and the trucker, the nurse and the nanny, the firefighter and the farmer. This day is set aside to hold up the labors of the individuals for the benefit of us all.

Most have the day off today, many do not. As we who have the day off go about our day enjoying our travels, taking in the parades, and undertaking memorable adventures, let us notice those around us who are making it possible. Let us brush off our “Thank you” and offer it as authentically as possible. Let us recognize that the work of others allow us the lives with amenities we often take for granted.

And let us look at our own labors for a moment or two, let us take time this day to dedicate the time and talent we exert to support ourselves to the glory of our LORD and the service of our sisters and brothers. Let us recognize the honor that lies within every task undertaken by us to provide not only for ourselves and our families but also for the good of others. Let us hold that honor and allow it to inform us about the good that comes about from our use of our time and talents, allow the need we are filling to conform us so that we may do it selflessly and cheerfully, and let it transform us into workers filled with gratitude and purpose.

I grew up surrounded by the honey business, Sioux Bee Honey, to be specific. I learned early on about bees and hives. Every member has a purpose. And while I don’t understand “bee”, I’m pretty sure I never heard or witnessed a discontented bee. They all understand both their purpose in the moment and the wonder of their world when everyone does one’s part. Things literally hum. It’s wonderful.
