Today is the day when we traditionally watch the clock in anticipation. Today we bid farewell to the old and welcome in the new. We put behind us, hopefully, the disappointments and hurt, and with great anticipation and aspirations, we step into a whole new year. We make lists of “resolutions” that we vow to keep. Today is the day.
What do we want to shed? What do we want to say goodbye to at midnight? Let us consider the hurts we’ve carried with us. Is this the time to set them down, forgive the other, and pick up in their place peace?
What do we want to start? What should we focus on as the new year begins? Christ tells us that it all boils down to right relationships with the LORD, with one another, and with ourselves.
What spiritual practice could we begin that would grow our relationship with the LORD? More prayer time? Bible study? Taking up Lectio Divina? Becoming more grateful and thanking the LORD daily for life, grace, and guidance.
What loving habit could we concentrate on every day? Reaching out to relatives who are alone or struggling? Volunteering our time to help at community services like the food pantry or the parish? Writing notes and cards to individuals whom we know are alone and long for connections and support?
What can we do to grow in our relationship with ourselves, self-love? Take care of our own health and quit unhealthy habits? Start or increase our exercise regimen?
As we go through this day, let us consider all three: love of the LORD, love of one another, and love of self. Let us see if we can land on one resolution for each of the three areas.
And let us consider whom we could tap as our accountability companion. Whom could we ask to have a weekly or bi-weekly check in on our resolution and prayer for the future?
May this be a day for looking back with gratitude, looking forward with hope, and looking all around with love.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
I am down with all three areas for my resolution!
