My Spotter (10/01/2025)

Some of my favorite adventures were road trips with my sister, Betty. And her favorite “role” on those trips was “spotter.” Nothing ever surprised us, because Betty was good at spotting things coming at us.

I was thinking about that recently. When we were merging, she’d tell me what was in my way and what I needed to avoid. When we neared a merging stream of traffic, she was all over it, “Incoming on your right at 4 o’clock.” She could not only spot road signs from miles away, but she could also read them and tell me which direction to head. Navigators are good to have, but on a real journey, we need spotters, too.

Same is true for our spiritual journeys. We need others, at times, to tell us what’s around us that we need to be aware of and adjust for so we can keep on keeping one. We need another, at times, to be watching out for what life has in store for us that is in our blind spot. We need a spotter to help us navigate this journey with as few bumps as possible.

I’ve had a few of those, too, the spiritual spotters, don’t you know. They’ve helped me recognize the traffic I’m moving in and through and give me advice on how best to do it for love of the LORD and others rather than for speed or convenience. They’ve spotted things in my spiritual blind spot and made me aware of them. And they’ve spotted things on the horizon and told me about them when they saw I was getting weary of the trip.

We are created in relationship for relationships. Not all relationships are the same other than that we are called to seek to make them as loving as possible. So, it makes sense that on our spiritual journeys, we will have special relationships with others along the way. Do you have a spiritual spotter who helps you see what you might be missing? Do you have someone who can read the signs of the road for you when you’re too caught up with all that’s swishing past you?

It’s worth considering.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
