My Why (06/13/2026)

Why do I write about nature, a turtle on a golf course, coffee with others, and using a light on the basement stairs? Really? Isn’t this supposed to be all about spirituality?

My blog is all about our spiritual journey. The disconnect between myself and those who would question why I write about the ordinary things in life is in our understanding of what that means. To some, a spiritual blog should be all about prayer and religious exercises. To me, a spiritual blog should be all about life and the fact that our spirituality isn’t separate from it but rather our spirit is informed by our lives and our lives inform our spirituality.

My faith journey isn’t relegated to an hour of the day or a particular place. My faith journey is my whole life, every moment of it. My faith, hope and love inform every encounter, and every encounter further informs my faith, hope and love. I’m on a life-long formation program; there is no summer vacation or recess. We run into real problems when we try to pigeonhole our faith and spirituality, if we try to limit it to a particular time of day or even of a week. I would say to do so is to reduce our spiritual potential to religiosity.

As I live, each new experience holds the potential of connecting me with the LORD’s power and presence at work all around me, within me, and through me. Every creature reminds me of the Creator. Every moment begs the question of time. How is it used, how is it lived for the glory of the LORD? Every challenge opens me to the power of the LORD and to LORD’s power invested within me. And if I will be all the LORD has created me to be, I must be aware of what is around me and I must be present to those who are sharing the journey with me. And finally, I must spend time “pondering.” I learned that important from the gospels and our Blessed Mother who frequently “pondered.”

Indeed, reflection is an important part of our journey. Without it, we risk attending the events of life but missing the experience. It is not the event that forms us, informs us, conforms us, and transforms us. It is the experience and finding the grace within it.

It’s all about connecting the dots, realizing that it’s all part of the journey. Everything I experience, if I ponder it, holds a nugget of the LORD’s truth that I am meant to digest and allow it to form me through power of the Spirit. When I sit and watch the squirrels play or listen to a wren’s song, I am struck by the power of a LORD who not only could create such a creature but wanted to create such a creature. As I behold a mother caring for her infant or an elderly couple walking hand in hand, I am enlarged by the love that flows from these individuals and I remember all over again the very source of all love, our LORD, love itself. Yep, it’s about connecting the dots.

And when I hear about the horrors of war and see the images, I am moved because these are my brothers and sisters. That is the way the LORD created us, one humanity. We are different but we should not be separated because of our differences. The LORD calls us to use those differences, our diversity, our uniqueness to add to the rich tapestry of our unity around our love for the LORD and our work to bring the LORD glory by living into the people we were created to be.

So, if you at times question why I write about the topics I write about in the blog, I hope this helps you to see into my rationale. My blog is about the spiritual journey, my spiritual journey, which is my life. My prayer is that you can discover within my writings a nugget that adds to your journey.
