Raindrops on the Porch Roof (08/01/2026)

As I sat on the porch last night at the end of a long day that capped off a long week, I was serenaded by the calming rhythm of raindrops on my porch roof. I found the patter soothing, not just because of its steady pattern but also because I know how much everything and everyone needed it. It has been too long since the last rain in these parts and the earth was parched, and our souls’ roots needed rain. Isn’t it wonderful how small things like raindrops on a porch roof can happy us up.

As I sat on the porch, listening to the raindrops on the roof, I reflected on my week and my day. I found myself seeing the good that happened around me all week: the comments on my blog from readers that encouraged me because it told me my words were meant to touch another; the market employee who tried to help me but was too short so she went and got a step stool and we ended up having a great conversation; my niece helping my mother call me when she realized my mother wasn’t answering my calls because she wasn’t hearing the phone ring; my son who volunteered to help me with a huge project; my conversation with a friend who is caring for her very ill daughter. And I could feel the LORD’s presence in each of those as much as in the raindrops falling from heaven.

As we continue to follow our Savior, walking in His footsteps carrying our own crosses, let us do so aware that no one understands our journey and its hardships more than Him. Let us trust in Him and His promise. Let us take upon ourselves His yoke and accept his invitation to come to Him and allow Him to give us rest.  And let us remain open to the small and still moments like listening to raindrops on the porch roof that sends our souls’ roots the very rain they need.
