Rose, the Hedgehog (06/02/2025)

Sunday is the best day of the week. It is a day of worship, and it offers me the opportunity to gather with others in Christ. And usually, it affords me the opportunity to speak with others who are also “on the Way.” That was true yesterday. I visited with several after church on the sidewalks just beyond the church steps. My favorite conversation was with a young girl carrying her stuffed hedgehog. She reminded me of the call we all receive.

I said hello to her, calling her by name, and I asked her if her stuffed hedgehog had a name. The little girl told me her hedgehog was named Rose because she had a beautiful rose sewn on her coat. And then she said, “And my mom loves roses.” Her mother, standing next to her smiled and said, “I do love roses.”  I stood and looked at the two and marveled at how the Spirit works.

Last evening as I reflected on my day, on my experiences and encounters with others, I thought of my conversation with this precious child about her stuffed hedgehog. She reminded me of my own learning of “the Way” – taking in what I could see and being guided by those who loved me. It worked for me. I believe it was the beginning for most of us. And then the Spirit gave me two questions to ponder: “What are we presenting to our youth so they might visually see Christ in their lives?” And “Are we conveying love to one another?”

Most of us learn “life” by witnessing others. What are we teaching others about life in Christ? Are we loving? Are we inclusive? Do others in our presence feel seen? Do our interactions with them convey authentic and loving concern for them? As I pondered that, I realized I still have a way to go, there are many areas where I need to improve.

And so, last evening before I retired, I prayed for help in my journey, help in being a good and faithful companion to others along the way, help in accompanying others lovingly, help in seeing others in such a way that they know they are seen, they know they matter, they know they are loved. I thought of my Savior. “Love one another as I have loved you.” And I asked the Spirit to help me to do just that.

As we continue our journeys, let us never lose sight of the fact that we are making the journey for our own life but that our Savior calls us to love those we encounter along the way who are seeking life, as well. May the Spirit guide us on our journey and in our relationships and encounters with others along “the Way.”

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
