The Little Things That Aren’t Little (06/28/2026)

I see them every day, the little things people do for others that aren’t so little when you think about it: the card sent to a friend struggling with grief, the stranger holding a door for a mother with three small children, the tall gentleman helping the shorter shopper reach the item at the back of the top shelf, the usher at church welcoming a newcomer, the teenager who picks up the item dropped by the woman in the wheelchair and returning it to the woman. These actions may appear insignificant in the world-wide scheme of things, but the truth is we all live in much smaller scheme, and these acts of loving kindness aren’t little at all. Each carry with it the unspoken truth that the one being served matters enough to warrant kindness.
Truth is that the larger the world gets, the more important these little acts become. The more impersonal spheres of our activities become, the more we need the reaffirmation that the individual person matters, that we matter. These acts don’t necessitate great sacrifices from the individuals in the moment, yet not to do them sacrifices great grounds in our fight to become the persons the LORD created us to be.
The little things we do in loving kindness for others, for family members, for friends, for strangers add up and can be transformative in a place, in a time. They require of us openness to the LORD’s Spirit and to one another. The LORD asks us to love one another as He has loved us not just on Sundays nor just those we like. This command of Jesus’ is meant for every day and for all we encounter.
Imagine how the world could and would change if we were all present to those around us and open to responding to the small needs we see in others. Most of us will never appear in books about great feats accomplished in science, medicine, government, social action. But all of us are capable of opening ourselves to the LORD and allowing the love of the LORD to flow through us to others in need that we encounter.
Let those of us making our way in faith, hope and love commit to the LORD to seeing our sisters and brothers and doing what we can in the moment to help the others on their journeys. Let us be willing to stop and help, to speak with kindness, to acknowledge the needs of the others.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
