The Melting Pot World (05/05/2026)

Today across the world individuals of Mexican heritage will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo in commemoration of the Mexican victory at Puebla on May 5, 1862. There will be parades and parties, people will dress in costumes and, of course, there will be special foods. As a woman of Irish descent, I understand the need to celebrate one’s heritage with pride. We are, after all, a melting pot world, and each of us bring a different spice or flavor.

That’s the way the LORD our God made us. We are all created in His image and likeness, yet we are each unique. And He calls us to let our diversity shine brightest in our unity when we bring ourselves to His will and purpose. One of my favorite readings from scripture is Ephesians 4: 1-6:

I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

This reading juxtaposes “one” to “all” and we see that the LORD calls us to “unity” in our “diversity”. As the Trinity, three divine Persons, and one LORD, we are called to be unique humans in one Body, the living Body of Christ. We are called to join our specific flavor to that of the others into one melting pot, our modern world, for the LORD’s purpose and in doing so to season the sauce, so to speak.

As we go about our way today, let us encounter one another with humble recognition that we are all created by the one LORD and with authentic appreciation for what the other brings to the pot – to the melting pot of our world. And let us all seek to open ourselves as fully as possible to the LORD’s intent and will. It is only in surrender that the full zest and depth of our uniqueness melds with the others to create the amazing reality the LORD created us and invited us into.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
