The Question (09/28/2025)

My husband and I have a late-night ritual. We sit in our chairs, winding down from the day, usually with the television muted during a commercial, and one of us starts it, “So, what do you have tomorrow?” And we take turns rattling off our appointments, commitments, and “want to do” lists. That’s how it started. One night after he went to bed, I went to the porch to ponder the day. And then before I signed off, I asked the LORD, “What do you have for me to do tomorrow?”

And you know what? The next morning, as I started my day on the porch with a cup of coffee with the LORD, I found I had some ideas of things I wanted to add to my day. They were little things like a phone call to someone to check on them, a note to another to encourage them, a call to volunteer for a project I’d seen that was looking for workers.

Over time, I’ve come to expect the answers to my question as I bring in the day, full of potential. I don’t know how He does it. But somehow, things I wasn’t really thinking about pop into my head and usually people are involved. And I mentioned to the LORD, just today, how impressed I am at His ideas and His persistence.

And I can’t help but think of one of my favorite hymns, “Here I Am Lord”. The refrain is:

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

We say we are the LORD’s disciples. As such, we must look to Him for direction. Doesn’t it makes sense to ask Him what He wasn’t us to do each day.

As we continue on our journeys of faith, let us commit to beginning with what the LORD is asking of us this day. After all, from His vantage point, He can see better the needs of not only those around us but also of us better than we can. Consider asking Him. What harm can it do?
