Today is Veteran’s Day here in the U.S. It’s a special day at our house. My husband is a veteran. He will be going to the middle school this morning for a special program honoring the veterans. He’s looking forward to it; our grandson who is an 8th grader asked his grandpa to participate. And on his way home he’ll be stopping at Kwik Trip for his free sandwich and drink.

We should honor those who have served our country and us. During my lifetime, I’ve known veterans from WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. Everyone, to the person, made personal sacrifices for us and for our nation beginning with time away from home and family. Some were asked to pay even heavier prices because of the dangers and cruelties of war. Today, we honor them all and hopefully assure them that we noticed and we are grateful.

Veteran’s Day reminds us of the nobility of the individual who responds generously with time and talent to serve others. We are all called to be servants, but we recognize that the vets of our nation went out of their way to serve; their service wasn’t in their spare time or on their schedule.

This morning as I was reflecting and praying, thinking about Veteran’s Day and the vets I know and their service, for some reason, the LORD reminded me of my confirmation and my promise to be “a soldier for Christ.” I thought of that promise and how I’ve tried to live that out. I must admit, compared to the sacrifices and service of the vets I know, my service is wanting. It made me appreciate the vets all the more and it caused me to recognize that there is so much to be done for Christ’s mission here on earth.

Today let us honor the men and women who have served the nation, served us, for love of the country and love of us.  Let us search for ways to give back to them.

Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
