“Write the vision.” As I studied the prophets in depth, I felt a real connection to these individuals who were urged to “write” that which they heard. I have been journaling since I was a teen. I find that writing my prayer helps me to live my prayer after I say “Amen.” There is commitment in writing that exceeds mere mental or spoken word. It is tangible. It is visible. It is there to encourage me later. It is there to remind me of unrealized or unkept promises.
The LORD asks of us that daily we strive to draw closer, to believe more fully, to hope more trustingly, to love more deeply. Our lives are a journey, no two moments the same. We change as the world around us does. We are on a journey, a spiritual journey made in physical increments. It is like the voyages of ages past where the captain kept a log, a journal, to record progress but also to put forward new needs, new conditions.
One of the ways that Christians throughout the ages have set forward spiritual goals is through journaling, writing out their prayers, their hopes, their promises to the LORD. Perhaps you could consider doing this daily or weekly. It helps to go “all in” in our spiritual promises because we physically engage in writing our thoughts and prayers, we can see them. They are there to remind us. They are there to help us see how far we’ve come and how far we’ve still to go. It’s just a thought.
And there is another side of this for our spiritual journeys – reading the written Word left by others who have sought the same as we are seeking, to love the LORD and to live as the LORD created us to live. We can benefit greatly from reading the scriptures, meditating on them, allowing the LORD to use the words of previous journeyers to inspire us, to challenge us, to inform us. As we come to know the stories, the lives of other believers, we build our own storehouse of resources for the journey: comforting words for challenging times, examples to follow in life, the teachings of Jesus that help us to choose wisely and live more fully.
A great way to dive into Scripture if one is not already doing so is to join a bible study group. Through the group effort, we are not only opening the Word prayerfully but benefitting from what others see and hear as well as what we glean from the Word. It can be truly illuminating.
Until tomorrow, let us all love well.
