40 Prayers (10/22/2023)

Last evening, I went to the 4:30 p.m. Mass because I am unable to attend this morning. As I sat in the second pew from the front, the vigil light stand caught my eye. It twinkled as the flames on the individual candles flickered. I counted them. There were 40 candles burning. And I wondered about those who had lit them. What were they seeking?

Were they offering thanksgiving for a blessing received? Were they seeking the LORD’s help in finding a loving resolution to a difficult situation? Were they asking for the LORD’s healing of a loved one?

Who were they? Who among us as a Christian community is in need? I had to admit I didn’t know the answers. But the questions moved me to consider more carefully the needs of those among us, to be more observant, a better listener, a more present companion to others.

In this hectic world, it is easy to keep to ourselves, in fact, at times it seems like that is what others want us to do. But we are Christians, and we know that means that we are part of the living Body of Christ. What impacts you, impacts me. We are called to love one another as Christ loves us and that simply can’t be accomplished from a “keep to yourself” stance.

Last evening before I left Church, I said a little prayer, asking the LORD for divine intervention in the lives of those who lit those 40 candles. I prayed for the healing of their loved ones, for the loving resolution of their difficult situations, and for the LORD’s continued power and presence in our midst.

Let us all commit to being more present to those with whom we share the journey of faith. Let us be willing to listen well, to care deeply, to help wherever we can, and be there for them in Christ’s name.
